In 2007, Janice visited Turkey for the
celebration of the 800th anniversary of the birth of Jalaluddin Rumi;
an Islamic spiritual master and Sufi poet whose message of universal
love has influenced spiritual seekers for eight centuries.
The paintings in the exhibition ‘Turn’
are a result of that journey. In Jan’s own words: “In the paintings
I created after the journey, I explore the idea of pilgrimage as a
journey from ‘self to Self’ – as a visual quest – through the
interplay between a three dimensional space and a plane. The two
dimensional surface is created by raised, heavily textured patterns
and the underlying world beneath is suggested by the archetypal form
of a light-filled vessel. The use of patterning emphasizes the
surface of the image, the seductive, material nature of the physical
world- the daily patterns of our lives, perhaps the small ‘self’, or
the ego. Lying beneath the surface patterning is the goal of the
quest, the ‘Self’, in the form of a vessel that is filled with
