Foreword
Creative people
constantly enrich our lives, and the work of any artist is a gift to
the rest of us. Sometimes, as in the case of Janice Mason Steeves,
that gift drops into your lap completely unexpected. When Jan and I
first met in 1997, she was bringing her work into the gallery to be
framed. I remember being immediately impressed by the strength and
simplicity of her paintings - and a little amazed that she was not
selling her work professionally. I asked her on the spot if I could be
her dealer, convinced that she was a special kind of artist,
possessing a unique voice. Fortunately, she said yes! It was the
beginning of a remarkably close personal and professional
relationship.
Seven years later,
Jan's gift is being recognised by a growing number of collectors
across Canada and around the world. Her work is shown by several
established galleries, and she is a successful and respected member of
the arts community. Her work continues to deepen and mature, producing
a body of work which is both emotionally charged and spiritually
resonant. Jan has always worked in an intuitive way, and her paintings
invariably flow from her own experience. Often, they record the search
for aspects of the sacred in our existence, and find it in the
recurring patterns of growth and ritual which underlie our lives and
bind us together. Recently, she has turned her eyes to flowers, seeing
them as a metaphor for both the fragility and the evanescent beauty of
life. The works in this exhibition certainly bear witness to the
continued creative flowering of a superbly gifted artist. We are very
proud to represent Janice Mason Steeves, and to celebrate our fourth
solo exhibition of her work with this catalogue.
